What version of Excel do I have? And does it matter?Back when I started using it, you bought a disk that said something like “Excel 2003” or “Excel 2016” and then that was it, that was your version until you bought another one.With Microsoft 365, the answer is not that straightforward - for a couple of reasons.Firstly, it is a constantly evolving product with constant new releases.Secondly, within Excel 365 you may have multiple channel options which I’ll explain in a bit. Or you may not if your organisation opts for, say, a six monthly build.Finally, there are differences between business versions and non business versions. For example, in my home subscription I don’t have Office Scripts, but I do with my work subscription. In fact, there are also subtle differences in business versions. Much to my annoyance you can only (officially) connect Power Query to Sharepoint if you have the Apps for Enterprise version. Apps for Business doesn’t cut it. (I say "officially" as there are workarounds - but why this should be necessary I do not know).So “What version of Excel do I have” may not matter 99% of the time but sometimes it does!About those channels.Within either a home or business set up, your version probably defaults to Current Channel but you may have an option to switch to either Current Channel (Preview) or Beta.Personally, I usually use Current Channel (Preview). Because I’m an Excel trainer I like to have a version that has gone through the Beta process. Sometimes functions change during Beta testing, which would be confusing for planning training materials.And some functions take ages to make it from Beta to Current - so I could be training on stuff that would not appear for most people for a year or more.Whereas when something has hit Current Channel (Preview) it usually isn’t far off the main build, so it gives me time to work out how or if I want to incorporate it into training.I always check at the start of training what versions people have, as I like to highlight really new functionality if it’s useful, but it can happen that people don’t yet have it.If you’re not sure what version you have, you can find this by going into File => Account.
