Welcome to the Village of Northfield! We are delighted that you are interested in our community of just over 5,000. While small in size Northfield offers convenient access to downtown Chicago, while maintaining it’s small town charm. The Village of Northfield is a home rule community consisting of approximately 5,500 residents and a little over 2,100 single family homes. The Village features a wide range of living styles ranging from quaint century old properties, to modern condominiums, to the most modern upscale mansions. Northfield is one of the few north shore communities which issues licenses for keeping horses and features extensive bicycle and jogging trails as well as the boating, wooded hiking trails, and bridle paths through the Skokie Lagoons Forest Preserve. The Village of Northfield offers a style of living suitable to all types of people. Families with school age children will enjoy some of the best schools in north suburban Chicago, while senior citizens will enjoy the largest and best-attended senior center in the area offering a wealth of programs and services. Northfield History The Village of Northfield was first settled in the mid-1800s by Mary Young and her two daughters near present day Bracken Lane. When the settlers first arrived, Northfield was a remote swamp that included the present day Skokie Lagoons as well as the “Middle Fork” branch of the Chicago River. Northfields were often called the “river folks” by residents of neighboring communities because of their struggles to get back and forth to church in their wagons through the lagoons. Early pioneering families in Northfield included the Donovans (1855), Brachtendorfs (1857), and Metzs (1861). A few years after the arrival of the railroad in Winnetka in 1854, blacksmith John Happ closed up his shop and moved to a Northfield farm with his nine sons and daughter. Happ’s grandson John became Northfield’s first Village President in 1926. From this small beginning, the Village began to attract other families who liked its small size and country atmosphere. The population surged from 320 residents in 1930 to 4,887 in 1980 and then 5,389 in 2000. To serve the small town, a Village Hall was built at the intersection of Happ and Willow Roads in 1936 where it remained in use for 31 years. A larger Village Hall is now located on the same site. As the city of Chicago grew and prospered throughout the twentieth century, Northfield prospered as well, and this once sleepy swamp town matured into one of the premier urban village’s within the Chicagoland area.

Principal's Message It is my pleasure and privilege to serve as the principal of Middlefork School in Sunset Ridge District 29. When Middlefork School first opened its doors in 1959, Northfield was a growing community, and according to Mary Osborne, Middlefork's first principal, the superintendent wanted to give the little kids a place all their own. Nearly sixty years later, Middlefork's kindergarten through third grade students continue to thrive in a safe, nurturing, child-centered environment created by a skilled and dedicated staff. Our Middlefork mission statement speaks to our commitment to the youngest students in District 29 and to our belief that only through a team effort will we maximize the early educational experience of each child. Middlefork Mission: To cultivate a learning community that engages the hearts and minds of young students, one child at a time, and that places the child at the center of all decision-making. As their children's first and most important teachers, we welcome parents as partners in our mission. Parent involvement in school and classroom programs is encouraged and appreciated. From literacy stations with first graders, to serving lunch in the cafeteria, or running a water game at Field Day, the opportunities to share in the Middlefork experience are numerous. Attendance at special events such as Open House, the Halloween and Vocabulary Parades, Winter and Spring Sings, and portfolio celebrations is just the beginning! Daily conversations about Number Corner, library time, PlayPods, The Principal's Vocabulary Challenge, PJ Day, the lunch menu, Dedicated Dolphins, class meeting, science time, Art, PE or Music, all show the children you are interested and value their education. Middlefork School is truly a wonderful place to teach and to learn. We have high expectations for our students and our staff and take great pride in their achievements. If you should have any further questions about our school or programs, I can be contacted at [emailprotected]. Mary Frances Greene, Ed.D. Principal

Welcome to Sunset Ridge School where our mission is “To cultivate a learning community that engages the hearts and minds of students, one child at a time.” Sunset Ridge serves students in grades four through eight. Our school is located in the Village of Northfield, approximately 20 miles north of Chicago. We provide an educational setting that meets the developmental strengths, interests, and needs of our students. We understand the importance of helping students build on their prior learning experiences in an academic setting. Our Code of Conduct provides the framework to help students understand the importance they have in helping maintain a positive and welcoming learning community for all students. Our Code of Conduct centers on four key areas: Responsibility, Respect, Safety, and Honesty. We are a strong learning community because we appreciate our different voices and understand the value of learning with and from others. Our 8th graders are our school's student leaders. We encourage them to set a positive role model for our younger students and to understand that they help contribute to the larger community in which they live. The school day, schedule, and educational setting at Sunset Ridge School are all tailored to meet the developmental needs of our students. Fourth grade continues with the self-contained elementary school model with some class exchanges for science and social studies. Starting in grade 5, students move by homeroom groups to content area teachers to continue to build their skills. Sixth graders also experience a departmentalized schedule. As each year passes, students acquire academic leadership skills that help them excel as learners. By seventh and eighth grade, students are engaged in a challenging individualized schedule that includes academic disciplines, fine arts exploratory classes and an advisory program to help prepare them for the transition into high school. Our faculty develops comprehensive curricular programs based on high expectations for student growth and achievement. Curriculum is continuously differentiated and enriched to meet the varied needs and talents of students. Students also interact regularly with specialists in the following areas: gifted, enrichment, art, library science, music, physical education, and technology. A support team including English Language Learners (ELL) teachers, a nurse, office staff, school psychologist, social worker, student services teachers, and speech and language therapists work with students to provide additional support. A variety of extracurricular activities are offered to enhance our educational programs. These programs include student government, athletics, drama, band, technology, and theatrical programs. In addition, a 7th and 8th grade student-teacher advisory program provides a supportive, child-centered environment that encourages building positive social relationships and the development of each and every individual child. Sunset Ridge School serves our community with a focus on building global connections. Students experience a rich curriculum and participate in learning activities that challenge them to think critically, learn cooperatively, and understand fully. We know our students cannot be measured by any one assessment, but as we review a portfolio of both quantitative and qualitative data on every student, we are able to provide a rich and engaging learning experience. We build on the foundation from home as students engage in educational debate, personal reflection and goal setting, and come to more fully understand that learning is a lifelong experience. We are honored to be a part of your child's journey as they team with us at Sunset Ridge School.

More than 150 clubs and other student activities, including an extensive social service component; 35 interscholastic sports (winning more athletic state championships than any high school in Illinois interscholastic history) and an extensive intramural program; and Fine and performing arts programs recognized among the nation’s top 25 by the U.S. Department of Education, including a Grammy award winning music department that is cited as the “best music education program in the country.” (2007)

GUIDANCE New Trier’s nationally-recognized student advisem*nt system provides a small-school atmosphere within a large school of outstanding opportunities. The Winnetka Platform Tennis Club (WPTC) is the nation’s largest and most vibrant platform tennis program, serving over 300 members from Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Winnetka and beyond. Dating back to 1978, the WPTC is Chicagoland’s oldest public platform tennis organization. It continues to work to promote and develop platform tennis in the community and is the largest user of the Winnetka Park District facility, accounting for over 80 percent of the court time used. Programs range from social to competitive… There are competitive travel teams for men and women, tournaments, social functions, and mixed couple events. The WPTC encourages new members to get involved in these exciting activities. For more information, please contact Greg O’Neil, Director of Platform Tennis: [emailprotected] The Winnetka Platform Tennis Courts are located behind the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Center and the Ice Arena near the golf course off Hibbard Road. About Platform Tennis Platform Tennis is an American racquet sport enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages. It is the only racquet sport that players can enjoy outdoors in cold weather. This unique appeal attracts people who desire fresh air, competition, and social engagement - all on a chilly winter's day or night. The sport is played at private clubs, public facilities, and in backyards at both highly competitive and purely recreational levels. Because it is easy to learn, it is enjoyed by players as young as eight and as old as old bones allow.
