DescriptionUnder general supervision, to install, inspect, calibrate, repair, and perform preventative maintenance, electrical safety inspections, and modifications and minor repairs on electronic, diagnostic, and therapeutic biomedical equipment.

Typical TasksThe following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
Performs preventative maintenance and electrical safety inspections;
Makes electronic, electrical, and mechanical repairs, modifications, and calibrations on all types of electronic equipment, including electrical and mechanical hospital beds, biomedical, ECG, respiration monitors, IV pumps, ventilators, infant incubators, patient monitoring systems, non-invasive blood pressure units, and other electronic equipment, such as patient surveillance, patient communication, and code blue systems;
Initiates purchase requests for repair parts and accessories;
Receives parts and accessories and maintains repair parts inventory;
Maintains accurate maintenance history records;
Makes recommendations on the purchase and disposition of medical equipment;
Assists in training nurses, therapists, and doctors on subjects such as electrical safety and proper use of computerized medical equipment;
Assembles, configures, and install beds, patient transport equipment, and other medical equipment;
May inspect and/or repair radiological and micro-processor medical laboratory equipment and patient surveillance and code blue systems;
Prepares reports, including Medical Equipment Program Management Plan, equipment failure analysis, product evaluation recommendations, productivity reports, equipment safety reports, and reports required by licensing and governmental agencies;
May represent the Biomedical Technical unit on interdepartmental committees;
Gives technical instruction and assistance to Biomedical Equipment Technicians;
Trains Biomedical Engineering Technicians in advanced Biomedical Equipment testing techniques;
Reviews the work of Biomedical Equipment Technicians;
May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
Performs other related duties, as required.
Employment StandardsSufficient education, training, and experience to demonstrate the possession and direct application of the following knowledge and abilities:
Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through training and experience equivalent to four (4) years of full time experience performing journey level preventative maintenance modifications and minor repairs on diagnostic and therapeutic biomedical equipment, similar in scope and function to a Biomedical Equipment Technician with the County of Santa Clara.
Special Requirements
Certification as a Biomedical Equipment Technician issued by the International Certification Commission (ICC) is desirable.
Ability to travel to alternate locations in the course of work. If driving, possession of a valid California driver’s license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver authorization.
Knowledge Of
Electrical and electronic theory, including discreet components, integrated circuits, microprocessors, and medical equipment;
Specialized test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, analog and digital multimeters, frequency generators and counters, and special instrumentation designed for testing biomedical equipment;
Hazards and applicable safety standards and performance requirements related to biomedical instrumentation;
Low voltage power and relays;
Calibration, adjustments, and proper grounding of equipment;
Joint Commission, Title 22, and FDA requirements relating to hospital equipment licensing and patient care;
Advanced databases and software languages as they relate to biomedical equipment;
Advanced concepts of computer systems and networking;
General knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, physics, chemistry, optics, pneumatics, hydraulics, and general hospital procedures.
Ability To
Interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, operational specifications, and illustrative drawings;
Analyze and correct malfunctions in complicated biomedical instrumentation;
Keep accurate maintenance and inventory records;
Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing;
Establish effective working relationships with other medical technicians, nursing and medical staff, hospital management, and sales and vendor service representatives.
Physical Requirements
Lift and/or move moderately heavy and/or bulky equipment and objects up to 50 lbs. without assistance;
Work in small, confined spaces;
Perform manual tasks, as necessary;
Work on weekends, holidays, and at odd or irregular hours.
