Fitter and Faster Swim Campsis the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

California state champion Marre Gattnar will head to Harvard this fall following a gap year for the 2023 Tamalpais High School graduate.

Last March, the North Bay Aquatics 18-year-old captured the 100-yard backstroke crown at the 2023 CIF State Championships with a winning time of 47.76, becoming the first male swimmer from Marin County to win a state title. Gattnar also took 3rd place in the 50 freestyle (20.13).

Gattnar proved he’s been putting in work since graduating by posting a slew of personal bests at the 2023 Winter Junior Championship – West meet last December. He triumphed in the 50 free (19.53), earned a runner-up finish in the 100 back (46.95) and 100 free (43.06), and placed 5th in the 100 butterfly (47.08).

Gattnar narrowly missed qualifying for this week’s Olympic Trials in May when he clocked a personal-best 22.96 in the LCM 50 free, not far off the cut of 22.79. He’s listed as an “Honorable Mention” recruit on SwimSwam’s recent re-rankings after not appearing on the top-20 list the past few years.

Best SCY Times

  • 50 free: 19.53
  • 100 free: 43.06
  • 200 free: 1:35.60
  • 100 back: 46.95
  • 200 back: 1:46.22
  • 100 fly: 47.08

Gattnar’s best 50 free time would have won the Ivy League title in February ahead of rising Harvard sophom*ore Sonny Wang (19.61). His best 100 free time would have placed 2nd, his best 100 back time would have placed 4th, his best 200 free time would have placed 5th, and his best 200 back time would have placed 8th.

Gattnar joins Evan Croley, James McGowan, Turkey’s Aykut Mert Iravul, William Sullivan, Joshua Chen, Richard Poplawski, Eric Lee, and Adriano Arioti in the Crimson’s 2024 recruiting class.

The Harvard men won the 2023 Ivy League title with 1,545 last season over Princeton (1,433.5). They’re led by head coach Kevin Tyrrell, who is in his 11th season at the helm of the Crimson program.

Instead of going to Stanford in his backyard, he’s going to Harvard. Stanford’s tailspin continues. With that being said, great choice, Marre!
