POSITION DETAILSThe Office of Special Programs (OSP) within the University Office of Academic and Faculty Affairs at The City University of New York (CUNY) is responsible for the stewardship of key CUNY-wide programs that increase, encourage, and support the inclusion and educational success of underrepresented student groups in higher education. The College Discovery (CD) and Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) programs enroll talented and motivated individuals whose academic record does not reflect their full potential, and offers students a variety of support services aimed at strengthening their basic skills, bolstering their academic success in all college courses, and maximizing their retention and persistence through to graduation.

Under the direction of the University Dean of Special Programs, the Director of Retention and Student Success in the Office of Special Programs will provide creative and visionary leadership in the development, prioritization, review, and improvement of The College Discovery (CD) and Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) programs’ student success services and initiatives. The position will also support the Office of Special Programs and CD/SEEK Programs with retention data, progress monitoring, strategic guidance to increasing student retention, decreasing student melt, and supporting at-risk students.

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview information, other key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Develops, promotes, and guides OSP’s strategic plan for student success in collaboration with the OSP Dean, ensuring alignment with the University's Strategic Roadmap.
  • Partners with the OSP team and campus directors to articulate and advance a clear, strategic vision for retention and overall student success within OSP for CD/SEEK programs, aligning with the broader objectives of the university.
  • Works closely with CD/SEEK Directors to craft, document, and evaluate effective retention and completion strategies, ensuring the provision of tailored support for college program staff and students.
  • Makes informed decisions regarding CD/SEEK student appeals, including issues related to admissions, re-admissions, and special academic sessions.
  • Acts as a liaison to the CD/SEEK committees, including the counselor and tutoring coordinator committees, to support processes and initiatives that are efficient, effective, and student-centered.
  • Leads the development and benchmarks for OSP’s special initiatives and partnerships for student success, retention and graduation around careers, internships, STEM and research opportunities.
  • Oversees, manages, and writes OSP grants to support student retention and success initiatives.
  • Collects and analyzes data analytics to assess the effectiveness of student success and retention services at the campuses by collaborating with the university's research and evaluation units.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with community-based organizations (CBOs) and key stakeholders to bolster student success efforts across campuses.
  • Works with CD/SEEK Directors and various university divisions to identify and implement comprehensive, high-impact student engagement initiatives that significantly contribute to student success.

QualificationsMINIMUMPreferredBachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.

  • Advanced degree in Education, Counseling, Student Affairs or a related discipline.
  • Extensive experience in higher education, particularly in student success, retention, and engagement initiatives.
  • Proven track record of effective leadership, strategic planning, and team management.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data-driven decision-making and program evaluation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration abilities, coupled with strong analytical, research, evaluation, and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education.
  • Proactive, diplomatic and collaborative work ethic with exceptional supervisory, interpersonal skills, adeptly navigating complex work environments with tact and diplomacy, while effectively engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders in group facilitation and relationship building.
  • Dependable with effective organizational, time management and priority setting skills to manage multiple assignments and projects and meet deadlines.
  • Computer proficiency using research, academic, administrative, and financial systems, databases, and programs, plus Microsoft Office programs, and remote/virtual meeting and collaboration tools (MS Teams, Zoom, etc.).
  • Travel between campuses and flexible hours may be required, including occasional evenings and weekends, to support program initiatives and student activities.

Cuny Title OverviewDirects the planning, development, and implementation of University-wide student-focused co-curricular and extra-curricular programs.

  • Partnering with University and College personnel, oversees needs assessments, develops programs and services, and implements related policies and procedures
  • Manages fiscal planning, allocations, marketing, and fundraising; oversees service agreements, partnerships, and relationships with vendors/contractors providing on-site services
  • Evaluates cost, usage, and effectiveness of student programs supporting engagement, success, retention, and enrichment of student life and the college experience
  • Ensures compliance with relevant laws, regulations, standards, and University policies
  • Provides leadership of the department, managing professional and administrative staff
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Compensation And BenefitsSalary range is $115,333 - $129,310, commensurate with qualifications, education and experience.
