gains early this after noon in quiet trading The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials at noon was up 185 at 68664 after being up nearly 8 joints inearly trading Advances which had led de clines by 3 to 1 earlier held only a slim lead over losers at mid day Profit taking and a supply of stocks for sale on market gains washed out any technical rally according to analysts Brokers had looked for a tech nical rally this morning because of the strong recovery the mar ket made late Thursday when the Dow closed about 9 points lower after having been off more than 17 points Steels and aircrafts were down while most other categor ies were mixed or slightly ahead Memorex trading was halted before noon because of an influx of orders The last trade was 78 off 2 Volume up to the halt was 44000 shares Memorex had a delayed opening due to an influx after closing Thursday at 80 up 4 Stock market prices standing at their lowest levels in seven years declined sharply for the second consecutive day Thurs day The Dow Jones average of 30 Industrials fell 905 points to 68479 The Dow average has not been as low since April 2 1963 when it closed at 68427 The average had been down over 16 points 30 minutes before the closing bell But the loss was reduced in the last few minutes by a flurry of trading as in vestors scurried to pick up some issues at low prices Over the past month the Dow average has lost 92 points On Wednesday the average plung ed 1075 points and fell through the 700 level The stock market is in the midst of its longest slide in the post World War II era Its present length surpasses any of the eight slumps since the 41 month dip between Nov 1938 and April 1942 Eighteen months ago the Dow Jones average was at the 980 level Ona per capita basis each of the 26 million stockholders has suffered a paper loss of about $10000 since 1968 said Bradbury Thurlo financial analyst with the brokerage firm of Hoppin Bros in New York That would represent a total loss of $260 billion or example 1000 shares of General Motors Thursday were worth about $64000 Last year at the end of April the shares were worth about $81000 Over all industry observers estimate more than $160
