Lakeside gains two new ice cream shops (2024)

DULUTH — Two new ice cream shops are moving into the Lakeside neighborhood this summer.

Crank & Dasher is arriving with its second Duluth location and The Scoop on 47th is putting a new twist on what was formerly known as 8th Street Video & Ice Cream Station on 47th Ave. East.

The Scoop on 47th now open

The Scoop on 47th opened June 9, and will post more information about its upcoming grand-opening event on Facebook.

The new ice cream and antique shop is located at 714 N. 47th Ave. E., next to Sinclair Gas Station. Also nearby is Lakeside’s Portman Square Park, Essentia Health-Lakeside Clinic and Sammy’s Pizza.

“It’s been here since 1997, so it was already established,” co-owner Roberta Peterson said. “There’s nostalgia. Many people that come in the door are saying they grew up coming here.”

Her husband and shop co-owner, Matthew Peterson, shares those fond memories. When the business became available, Roberta said purchasing it was “a no-brainer.”

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., it offers various flavors of Kemps ice cream by the scoop, coney dogs and other snacks.

There are also antiques available, left over from the previous business, in addition to DVDs, CDs and books. However, the new owners have downsized the retail space to make room for more seating.

The shop received a facelift, transforming the former green walls to hot pink, paired with a “sprinkle wall” for patrons to take selfies. A kid section was also added, as well as a private nook for book club meetings.

The shop is a family-run business. Matthew’s mother, Darlene Peterson, serves as a silent partner, and his brother, John Peterson, also helps out behind the scenes.

Aside from the business, Roberta also works full time as a social worker at Aspirus St. Luke’s and Matthew coaches girls track and field, as well as football at Esko Public Schools.

Crank & Dasher anticipated this July

Crank & Dasher has plans to open its second ice cream shop in Duluth this July. It will be located next to Amity Coffee on Superior Street in East Duluth, in the former site of Sutherland CBD.

Sutherland CBD owner Craig Sutherland said he decided to close up shop in Lakeside and reopen as Southside Bait & Tackle, located at 68225 Hwy. H in Iron River, Wisconsin. The new store will feature Sutherland CBD products, and the business will continue supplying Minnesota residents through its online service.

“We're finding that Wisconsin laws are far more friendlier,” Sutherland said. “It’s 5.5% sales tax here compared to nearly 20% in Minnesota. Wisconsin also adopted the Federal Farm Bill, which is far more relaxed than when Minnesota created its own statutes and regulations.”

As for Crank & Dasher, there will be special events and promotions throughout its opening month.

Crank & Dasher’s first location continues to operate at Fitger’s Complex, and is situated near the Lakewalk. Its products are also sold at local grocery stores, like Mount Royal. The local business also recently expanded into the Twin Cities market through a partnership with Kowalski’s Markets.

The new shop will serve a rotation of ice cream flavors made of farm-sourced ingredients, including cream from Forest Lake-based Autumnwood family farm, as well as vegan options and items from their confectionery line.
