My Favorite Bourbon

As you might recall, I’ve recently become a bourbon fan. A few years ago I wouldn’t dream of making or ordering a bourbon-based drink. However, after intentionally trying bourbon whenever I had the opportunity, it’s now a favorite. I’m especially fond of Four Roses Single Barrel, which you will often see me use. For maple syrup, you can’t miss with my go-to: Finding Home Farms. This time around, though, I opted for their Rye Barrel-Aged Maple Syrup. I thought a maple syrup aged in a whiskey barrel would make a lovely addition. I was right!

If you don’t have this particular maple syrup, don’t worry. Your co*cktail will be equally delicious. Just make sure you use REAL maple syrup. I’ve shared my recommendations below.

Ingredients

Now we are ready to gather up the handful of ingredients you’ll need to shake up this cider and maple old fashioned.

  • Bourbon (Four Roses Single Barrel): A premium bourbon with spicy flavors and a smooth finish. Single barrel bottling ensures a unique character in every sip.
  • Pure Maple Syrup (Finding Home Farms): A rich, natural sweetener with caramel undertones. Produced artisanally for both flavor and sustainability.
  • Apple Cider: Offers a tangy but fresh kick, balancing the co*cktail’s richness. Its taste is reminiscent of crisp fall days and fresh orchards.
  • Orange Bitters: Introduces a zesty citrus edge, elevating the aromatic experience and bridging sweet and spicy notes.
  • Cinnamon Sticks (for garnish): A visual treat that subtly infuses the drink with its warm, aromatic essence as it steeps. I prefer these longer cinnamon sticks for co*cktail garnishes.

Simply follow the simple instructions below to prepare this fall-inspired old fashioned. I’ve also provideda full ingredient list and detailed instructions in the printable recipe card at the end of this post.

  1. To a co*cktail shaker filled with ice, add the bourbon, pure maple syrup, apple cider, and orange bitters.
  2. Then shake up the mixture to cool and combine.

Recipe Variations

Here are a few variations you can make to this specific recipe. I’ve also include a few other unique flavored old fashioned recipes below.

  • Spiced Cider Old Fashioned: Infuse the apple cider with cloves, star anise, and a slice of ginger before using it in the co*cktail. This adds a warming and aromatic layer that’s great for cold evenings.
  • Caramel Apple Old Fashioned: Rim the glass with caramel before pouring in the co*cktail. This adds a sweet, sticky touch that complements the apple and maple flavors.
  • Cider and Honey Old Fashioned: Replace the maple syrup with raw honey. It adds a floral sweetness that pairs well with the apple cider.
  • Smoked Maple Old Fashioned: Use a smoking gun or a lit cinnamon stick to infuse the co*cktail with a smoky aroma just before serving. It adds a rustic, campfire-like element to the drink.

Absolutely! While Four Roses Single Barrel is recommended for its unique profile, any quality bourbon should work in this recipe. Adjust to your taste.

Is there a non-alcoholic version?

For a non-alcoholic twist, substitute the bourbon with non-alcoholic apple cider or ginger ale. You’ll still enjoy the seasonal flavors!

I don’t have orange bitters. Can I still make this?

While orange bitters enhance the co*cktail’s depth, you can skip them or substitute with a twist of orange zest for a hint of citrus. You can also use classic angostura bitter.
